Glenn Ford with his beloved dachshund Bismark. Bismark was a present from Glenn’s onetime lover and costar Maria Schell, who gave the dog to him just after William Holden died and Glenn was having a really rough time dealing with the loss of his best friend. Maria told him the dog’s pedigree rivaled that of the German aristocracy, and with that in mind Glenn named him Bismark. Bismark would become his pride and joy. When he divorced Cynthia Hayword, he spoke into his tape recorder his thoughts, and how Bismark helped him grieve. “Thank God for little Bismark, who stays with me all night. He understands and puts his head on my lap when I cry as though he understands….I’m frightened. Is this the way my life is going to end up, in deep sadness? When Bismark died, Glenn’s wishes were that Bismark be cremated and his ashes be buried along with him. When Glenn died in 2006, Bismark was buried along with him.
